Statement conventions in Kenya

Kenya statements in our profile set use DD/MM/YYYY date ordering and are denominated in KSh KES. Date ordering is the single most common source of silent conversion errors — a DD/MM/YYYY statement read as US ordering produces plausible-looking but wrong dates for every day below the thirteenth of the month, which is why the Kenya profiles pin the order rather than inferring it per row.

Layout quirks these profiles handle

  • Kenya's oldest bank (tracing to 1896) and one of the largest by assets, with KCB Group also operating across Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan — cross-border KCB transfers can appear in narrations even on a Kenya-only account
  • That 1896 origin was as a branch of the National Bank of India, later operated as Grindlays Bank, before the Kenyan government took majority ownership and renamed it Kenya Commercial Bank around independence
  • M-Pesa, PayBill and till-number references often add a second line of narration under the main description
  • KES amounts may include comma thousands separators and blank debit or credit cells depending on transaction direction
  • Opening and closing balance rows need to be validated but not exported as transaction rows themselves
  • Began as Equity Building Society in 1984, nearly collapsed in the 1990s, and was restructured into a commercial bank only in 2004 — since becoming one of Africa's largest banks by customer count on the strength of deliberately targeting low-income and previously unbanked customers

Importing into Kenya accounting tools

Export to CSV and import into QuickBooks, Sage, Zoho Books or another bookkeeping system — the tools Kenya bookkeepers most often run. Amounts and dates are normalised on export so the column mapping in the import wizard resolves without hand-editing.

Conversions are processed in memory, are never used to train AI models, and the workflow is built to align with Kenya's Data Protection Act 2019 for Kenya account holders.
